At Climate Justice International, we believe that the proposed coal plant in Lamu is not only irrelevant and immoral but also dangerous to marine ecosystem, human health, water, air pollution and climate change. We advise against the proposed coal plant in Lamu, Kenya. Establishment of coal plant in Lamu may cause irreversible negative damages to the marine ecosystems.
When coal burns, it releases toxins and harmful gases into the atmosphere. These toxins have serious health implications inclining but not limited to asthma and breathing difficulties, to brain damage, heart problems, cancer, neurological disorders, and premature death. When coal is burned, it produces coal ash and if inhaled or comes into contacts with animals, and or marine ecosystems, its impacts are deadly.
Climate change is coal’s most serious, long-term, global impact. Chemically, coal is mostly carbon, which, when burned, reacts with oxygen in the air to produce carbon dioxide, a heat-trapping gas. In the wake of these deadly impacts of coal-fired plant, the continued use of coal-fired power is gaining negative rating.
What we do

- To carry out capacity building and community empowerment against coal plant dependency
- To create national and international awareness on the devastating impact of coal plant
- To advocate for renewable energy alternatives in in Kenya and Africa
- To root for inclusive public participation for feasible environmental impact assessment
- To carry out monitoring and evaluation assessment for gas and renewable energy in the region
- To develop environmental and social impact assessments (ESIA) to inform envisioned projects
